We have had a few workshops over the last year at the AIE. They have been wonderful! So far the workshops we have scheduled have been for people who already have some painting experience, (Although we may offer some in the future to beginners).
But I wanted to address something quick on why we have workshops. When answering questions about the classes I realized there were some I had to repeatedly answer, like, do we have to buy the specific paints the teacher has on the list? What if we want to do something different, or do a different style than the teacher is teaching?
The wonderful thing about workshops is that you are learning something from someone who is already an accomplished artist, someone who has worked out all the flaws in a process to achieve a specific outcome.
When in the class the instructor will teach you little tricks they have developed or learned, and show you something you may not know. Or possibly maybe you did know it once upon a time but forgot about it. Then when you get back to your studio you can either use the tricks and lessons the instructor taught. Or you can adapt them a bit to form a new style, or you can discard the lesson all together. But chances are good you will leave a workshop motivated to create something!
Take myself for example. When I was in college I painted a lot of watercolor paintings, and did my pottery. But over time I didn’t have time to do both and raise a family so I ended up packing up my watercolors. This year I have taken both watercolor workshops and have been painting again! Although I have decided that I will keep my paintings to myself for a while. But this motivates me to work more in my studio. I have something new to do in there again. I’m not just restocking shelves for the gallery I am re inspired and the new inspiration is coming out in my pottery too!
It is good to do new things, and continue to learn. This is how we grow in ability and in motivation. I am looking forward to many more workshops scheduled, and I hope many people can come and share new experiences at the AIE!!!
Susen Semenick teaching us how to paint portraits. Susan is a nationally recognized artist who was an amazing teacher!!! For both her portrait class and her watercolor landscapes!
